Several of Lowndes County’s longtime residents will prove Wednesday that a healthy lifestyle isn’t only an aspiration of youth.
The Tuskegee University Cooperative Extension Program is once again presenting the annual Lowndes County Senior Olympics on March 25, 2015 at the Jackson-Steele Community Center in White Hall.
The goal of the Olympics each year is to promote a healthy lifestyle for the county’s senior citizens through education, fitness and sports, as well as the good old-fashioned spirit of competition.
2015 marks the sixth year for the occasion and, has history has proven, the event has proven a huge success.
More than 200 participants packed the Jackson-Steele Community Center to capacity last March, and county agent Millicent Braxton of the Tuskegee University Extension Program said that even more came from the surrounding communities of Dallas, Butler and Montgomery counties.
“They played checkers, went on a one-mile walk, and did jazzercise to get the blood flowing and moving,” Braxton said.
Lowndes County District Court Judge Adrian D. Johnson made an appearance for a handful of games of checkers.
“So we had different people from the county come out to help make this program successful,” Braxton added.
There are expected to be cards, bowling, arts and crafts, basketball free throws, horseshoes, musical chairs, dominoes and even more to round out the list of activities.
Participants must be 55 years of age and older to register, and the fee is $5.
The Jackson-Steele Community Center will kick off the festivities at 8:30 a.m.
