Lowndes Academy defeated region opponent South Montgomery County Academy 34-21 on Friday night at Rebel Field in Hayneville.
Running back Chance Ward scored three touchdowns for the Rebels (3-1) and rushed for 141 yards in the high-tempo offense. Ward also had an 85-yard run on a kickoff return.
“We moved the ball pretty well,” said Coach Art Sullivan. “We also missed some blocking assignments.”
The Rebels had a couple of penalties, blocking in the back and holding, that kept them from a couple of additional touchdowns.
Quarterback Hank McIntosh went 4-for-8 for 91 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to senior Anderson Casey.
Wide receiver Toby King put six points on the board against the Raiders (1-2).
“Defensively we played fairly well in the first half,” said Sullivan. “We put in some fresh guys in the second half that lined up in the wrong positions…that led to a couple of touchdowns for the Raiders.”
Defensive back Richard Pate recovered a fumble and totaled 12 tackles during the game.
The Rebels will face Wilcox Academy (0-3) at home Sept. 17. Southern Academy defeated the Wildcats 19-7 in their last match.
Lowndes Academy will be working on offensive blocking assignments to fine tune its execution for their game against Wilcox Friday, according to Sullivan.
“Wilcox’s running game is a lot better and their defense is a little more aggressive than SMCA,” said Coach Matt Marshall. “They overall seem to be a more physical team.”
