The Lowndes County Board of Education received clean audit from the state Department of Public Examiners Friday.
According to a summary of the audit, which covered the period from Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011 and was released Friday, “Procedures performed during the audit did not disclose any material instances of noncompliance with applicable state or local laws and regulations.”
However, according to the summary, “The board appears to have been underpaid sales taxes as a result of a distribution error by the Lowndes County Commission.”
While the summary states the potential amount of the error has not yet been determined, it reports the “board is in negotiation with the Lowndes County Commission as to how this matter will be resolved.”
In February it was reported in The Lowndes Signal that the board gave Lowndes County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Boyd permission “to work with an attorney to come up with some resolution to solve this particular problem.”
While Boyd said the problem with the under payment of taxes has not been resolved as of this point, he said he was proud of the audit results, which will be presented at the board’s October meeting.
“It just goes to show you that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to be doing, making sure we’re spending tax payers’ money in a responsible, prudent manner,” he said.
