County gets ready to Relay

Are you ready to Relay Around the World this Friday night?
The Lowndes County Relay for Life event aiming to raise $43,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society is on tap Friday, April 26 from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. at the Russell Baseball Complex in Hayneville.
Zandra Colston, co-chair of the event, stresses, however, this event is for all Lowndes County, not just Hayneville. And, she said, there are lots of activities on tap including, “the community uniting as one” the last six hours.
“Bring lawn chairs, sleeping bags and tents,” Colston said, “anything you will need to camp out.”
She said a fireworks show will kick off around midnight to start the Community Uniting as One.
She said there will be a coffee break, shrimp broil, kick ball game, karaoke hour and breakfast.
“Pick the hour you would like to represent, then come dressed to walk your laps when it’s called,” Colston said.
She said there will a Happy Birthday Hour at 12:30 a.m., Crazy Hat Lap at 1:30 a.m., Sunglasses Lap at 2:30 a.m., Sports Team Lap at 3:30 a.m., Mardi Gras Lap at 4:30 a.m. with the closing ceremony at 6 a.m.
A tentative schedule of events for the day includes:
Set-up form 8 a.m. – 12 noon; celebration eating for committee and teams from 12:30-2:30 p.m.; clearing the field of cars from 5:15-5:30 p.m.; open bidding for baked goods from 5:30-8 p.m.; taking chances on the quilt from 5:30-midnight; and the relay start at 6 p.m.
Miss Relay will be crowned and survivors lap from 7-8 p.m.; team acknowledgement from 7-8 p.m.; walking begins at 8 p.m.; activities begin at 8:30 p.m.; luminaria sales stop at 9 p.m.; luminary lighting and lantern release from 10-11 p.m.; and awards from 11:30 p.m.-12 a.m. with the fireworks from 12-12:15.
