In intense Calhoun/Central matchup: A tale of two area champions

In an intense rivalry matchup between the Calhoun Tigers and the Central Lions at Central on Saturday night, both schools came away with 2A, Area 6 basketball championships.
The Calhoun varsity Lady Tigers became area champions Saturday night with a 63 – 48 win over Central at Central and will host the 2A, Area 6 tournament in February. And The Central High School varsity boys Lions became area champions on Saturday night, as well, with 75-54 win over Calhoun and will also host the area tournament in February.
With the win, Calhoun Lady Tigers improved to 18-4 overall and 6-0 in area play. The Lady Lions have managed only one win this season.
Central was led by Derrica McCall with 19 points while Calhoun was led by Amber Harris with 22 points and Toni Young with 20.
With the varsity boys victory, Central is 8-6 overall and 4-0 in area play. Calhoun fell to 3-17 and 3-3 in area play.
Central was led by Jaquez Billing with 20 points while Calhoun was led by Arthur Phifer with 19 points.
Central varsity boys head basketball coach Brian Coleman said the area championship clinched with the win over Calhoun Saturday “feels good for the guys to be part of this.” He said, “We been having a pretty good season so far, especially in 2A.”
