The Calhoun High Lady Tigers are champions of Class 2-A Area 6 girls basketball and the Central High Lady Lions are runner-up.
The Lady Tigers claimed their second straight area title Friday night in their home gym by defeating Central’s Lady Lions 69-51.
Calhoun was led by Amber Harris with 20 points, Mya Smith with 18 points and Toni Young with 17 points. Central was led by Orianna Gordon with 21 points.
Calhoun Lady Tigers head basketball coach Eddie Howard said Friday’s win was the second area title in a row and that his team made it all the way to the sub-regional at Alabama State last year.
He said of Friday night’s performance, “We didn’t play to our potential. We came out flat. Like I always say, it’s going to be a dogfight when it comes to the two rivalry schools.”
Howard said he thought his girls were over confident because they had beaten Central twice in the regular season.
Calhoun led Central 20-13 at the end of the first period, 33-22 at the half, 48-32 in the third quarter and 60-51 in the fourth.
Calhoun will host it next opponent while Central will travel on Monday.
