The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Fort Deposit Police Department are investigating a burglary in the third degree and theft of property in the first degree from the BD Shop reported on Friday, Dec. 23 at the 200 block of Old Fort Road, Fort Deposit.
According to an incident report from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, stolen was an ATM machine valued at $2,500. And damaged was a business wall in the amount of $200.
The business is located at Alabama Highway 185 and Hale Street, according to Fort Deposit Police Chief Terry Steiner.
Steiner said the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident, which occurred 3:54 a.m. Friday morning. He said he was on vacation at the time.
However, he said, his department and the sheriff’s office are working “side by side” on the investigation.
Steiner said three black males took an ATM machine early Friday morning. He said he did not know the amount of money that was inside the ATM machine.
According to Steiner, the owner of the store said his business had been broken into several times.
While Steiner said his department is in the process of hiring an additional police officer, he said, “We could have a thousand police, but that still doesn’t mean that we could stop someone from stealing an ATM machine.”
He said his department does have the town of Fort Deposit covered with the help of the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Steiner said anyone with information should call the Fort Deposit Police Department at 334-227-4331 or 334-850-1549.
