The Calhoun Tigers varsity boys put up a valiant effort, but fell to Goshen at Goshen 54-50 Thursday night to finish as Class 2A Area 6 runner-up.
Calhoun varsity boys head basketball coach Derrick Powell said, “We fought till the last second, but couldn’t pull it through.”
However, he said, the Tigers will play in sub-regional action Tuesday, Feb. 14 and that he hoped all Calhoun Tiger fans will take the ride to support them “because we need them.”
In last Thursday night’s action for Calhoun, Le Darius Maull scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, D’Andre McCovery scored 10 points and both Jeremy Morgan and Jamichael Boone scored 8 points each.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14 the Tigers will play the winner of Verbena and Thorsby at 6 p.m. at their home gym.
“We have the opportunity to go deep into this tournament,” Powell said. “We are playing 10 times better than we were in the beginning.”
He continued, “Our players have stepped up and bought into their individual and team identity. We still have a lot of learning to transpire, but I believe in my boys and my philosophy.”
Powell said, “I will continue to teach them everything I know about the game. My administration and athletic department have been our sixth man, and that is a huge help with this being my first year as the head coach.”
He said finishing runner-up in the area was big accomplishment for the program and his team having shown great resilience “deserve it.”
