Calhoun Tigers fall to Luverne 58-0 on the road

After trailing 49-0 at the half, the Calhoun Tigers fell to the Luverne Tigers 58-0 Thursday night, Oct. 5 on the road.
The loss was the sixth straight for Calhoun in 2017 without scoring a point. And while the loss dropped the Calhoun to 0-6, 0-3 in Class 2A Region 3 play, Calhoun head football coach Ervin Starr said of his Tigers, “We got better tonight.”
He said for Calhoun, Tyrese Seawright “ran the ball well” gaining 64 yards on eight carries.
Starr also said his players, Demareus Cheatham, Kristopher Melton and Novian Jiles all had “great defensive efforts” with Jiles getting four tackles for loss.
For Calhoun, Seawright is a sophomore running back, Cheatham is a sophomore safety, Melton is a freshman defensive back and Jiles is a senior defensive lineman.
Not counting a preseason game with Geneva High, Luverne improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Class 2A Region 3.
The Luverne Tigers had 17 yards passing and 249 yards rushing for 266 total yards of offense.
Luverne was led in rushing by Marcus McGhee who had nine carries for 140 yards and four touchdowns.
The Calhoun Tigers travel to Elba for another regional encounter on Friday, Oct. 13.
