Rebels get first regional win 27-7 over Hooper

The Lowndes Academy Rebels improved to 3-1, 1-1, in getting their first Class A Region 2 win of the season over Hooper Academy on the road in Hope Hull, 27-7 Friday, Sept. 14.
The victory represented a rebound from a regional loss to Patrician Academy 13-6 the week before.
Lowndes Academy head football coach Shane Moye said it was good bring the Hooper/Lowndes rivalry back and that both teams played hard.
But, he said, his defense played “outstanding” football.
Moye pointed out that both Mason McCurdy and Daniel Janes had what he called “huge” interceptions, in addition to an interception and fumble recovery by Will Cannon.
Moye said, “I’m really proud of our guys. We played hard all night. We had a lot of things go wrong early, but the team kept fighting and found a way to win.”
He said his Rebels are a tough team that plays its best football in the fourth quarter week in and week out.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Rebels got on the board first Friday with a Tyler Smith 1-yard run and Rostik Smith point after to lead 7-0.
The Rebels upped the lead to 13-0 in the third quarter on a Tyler Smith 6-yard run and failed 2-point play.
The Colts made it a 13-7 game in that same quarter on a 25-yard pass from Dakota McGehee to Jared Kelly and Mason Ivey kick.
Tyler Smith would score his third touchdown of the night for the Rebels on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. And McCurdy ran for the 2-point play to put the Rebels up 21-7.
Trevor Haney scored the final touchdown of the night for Lowndes on a 3-yard run. The kick failed, but the Rebels had their first regional win of the season 27-7.
The Rebels amassed 313 yards of total offense against the Colts with 52 yards through the air and 261 yards on the ground.
And the Revels held Hooper to 129 yards total offense with 77 yards passing and 52 yards rushing.
For the Rebels on offense, Smith was two of nine passing for 52 yards and one interception.
Haney caught one pass for 33 yards and Colby Briggs caught one pass for 19 yards.
Haney had 20 carries for 125 yards and one touchdown while Tyler Smith has 16 carries for 77 yards and three touchdowns.
Defensively for Lowndes, Daniel Calloway had five tackles, two assists, one sack and two tackles for loss. And Chase Little had five tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss.
Gus page and Will Cannon each had four tackles and one assist, while Haney had four tackles.
Lowndes will next host Coosa Valley Academy for homecoming on Friday, Sept. 21.
