The Calhoun Tigers defeated their arch rivals, the Central Lions 84-72 Saturday, Feb. 9 at home to claim the AHSAA Class 2A Area 6 varsity boys Basketball Tournament title at Calhoun.
The Tigers advanced to state 2A sub-regional at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Calhoun.
Jerdarrian (J.D.) Davison led Tigers with 20 pints, Tacorian McCall scored 19 points, Trayvon Brown scored 13 points and Dremaricus Hayes scored 12 points.
Travell Mcreynolds led Central’s effort with 25 points while Imaruion Watson scored 12 points.
Calhoun head basketball coach Ervin Starr said following the win, “I think we played good team ball throughout the tournament. Tonight, I think we just dominated scoring wise.”
He said his Tigers matured since a loss at Luverne on Jan. 22. And he said a tough schedule and tough tournaments out of state and in state prepared his team for the area tournament play.
Starr said his Tigers played “team ball” against an “outstanding, well coached” Central team.
Central head basketball Brian Coleman said Saturday’s championship game against Calhoun was a “rough one” for his Lions. “We started out rough. Couldn’t make a shot, and they were hitting everything.”
He said he saw Calhoun youngsters making shots Saturday night he had not seen make shots.
Coleman said, “They were just on tonight.” He said his own team had an “up and down season,” which was not the norm for Central. But, he said, “We put on a good show for everybody.”
