A few days ago, Nick Saban was the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide and was entrenched as very possibly the greatest coach ever. A few days ago, 2023 National Coach of the Year, Kaleb DeBoer led the Washington Huskies into the National Championship game. Today Saban is retired, and DeBoer is the coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. 

Everything changes.

I drive through Montgomery and remember when I was a child. I remember Pizitz downtown. I remember Sears on Court Street. I remember going to Morrisons downtown for Sunday lunch. I went to Capital Heights Elementary. 

Everything changes.

I remember elderly men and women walking out of the church building where I had just preached, and saying something like, “Great lesson. If you will keep at it, you will be a great preacher some day!” Now I am that elderly man, though I try to never say that to a young preacher. 

Everything changes.

I remember taking my driver’s test just off Federal Drive in Montgomery. Now I watch my 17-year-old Grandson climb in his red truck and drive off. My wife and I remember when it was just us. Then, we remember every birth of our children, and now every birth of our grandchildren. 

Everything changes.

Everything changes except for one thing. As we watch the passage of time, it flows before our eyes. When what we used to do easily becomes hard or sometimes impossible, we understand time changes things. But there is that which is not touched by the hand of time.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).

He won’t change, so we need to meet Him at His cross!
