The 11th Annual Dr. Luke N. Taylor Black History Oratorical Contest was held on Feb. 17 in the Lowndes County Public School (LCPS) central office auditorium. 

The event was hosted by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Epsilon Theta Sigma Chapter, in collaboration with Lowndes County Public Schools. 

The contest provided a platform for young minds to articulate their thoughts on a theme critical to society: “The Impact of Diversity.”

This year, the spotlight was on the youth as students from grades four to eight took center stage to express their perspectives on why diversity holds paramount importance in their lives. 

The topic, “Why is diversity important to me?” spurred insightful reflections and heartfelt sentiments from the participants, shedding light on the profound ways in which diversity shapes their daily experiences and perceptions.

The winners of the oratorical contest, representing LCPS elementary schools, were the following: 

• 1st Place – Landon Rivers 
• 2nd Place – Tariyah Jordan 
• 3rd Place – Tino Taylor 

Winners representing Lowndes County middle schools were:

• 1st place – Maia Green
• 2nd Place – Zamiyah Lewis
• 3rd Place – Chasity Barganier
• 4th Place – Joshua Gordon
• 5th Place – Harmony Mayfield
• 6th Place – Jaquan Wright
