The Lowndes County Probate Office is partnering with the U.S. Department of State to bring Passport services to the citizens of Lowndes County. Beginning June 10, the Probate Office will begin accepting Passport applications.
Lowndes County Probate Judge LaShandra Myrick took the initiative to bring passport services to the area. Passport services are not available in every county and Myrick said she made the effort so citizens would no longer need to travel to east Montgomery to drop off their applications.
“Passport services are something that I know is available,” Myrick said. “So, I just took the initiative to go to the U.S. Department of State, the passport service agency, to apply to offer it here.”
Myrick completed extensive training and certification which allows her office in Hayneville to accept passport applications. She said her office receives inquiries about the service often, so she felt certain the service would enhance offerings for Lowndes County and surrounding areas.
“We have so many people calling to ask if we issue passports,” Myrick said. “This has been about a year or so in the making and now it is here.
Applications may be submitted in person at the Probate Office in Hayneville Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. by appointments only. The U.S. passport cost is $130.00, payable by check or money order.
The passport application fee is $35.00, payable only in cash. These fees must be paid separately.
According to Myrick, passport renewal applications can also be submitted through her office, a service she hopes will save applicants the cost of driving elsewhere for the service.
“Over time, as the word gets out, I think we will have many applications and maybe some from neighboring counties,” Myrick said. “Citizens currently have to go to the post office in east Montgomery to apply. So, if they come here, that saves about a 50-mile trip.”
