Deputy Michael Canalin has been elected as president of his class at Jefferson County Sheriff’s Training Center. Selected for the honor by the popular vote of his peers, Canalin is one of four class officers for the program.
“We’re very excited about this,” said Sheriff Chris West. “This is huge for our county, to have an officer do so well among people from all over the state.”
According to Sheriff’s Lieutenant Nicholas Cognasi, Canalin is excelling in his courses. With a grade point average (GPA) of 85.3, he has already passed radar and LIDAR (light detection and ranging courses.
“The majority of attendees are from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department,” Cognasi said. “They get to elect who they want for officers and Deputy Canalin was elected as President of the class.”
Two new deputies are enrolled in the training. Canalin and Kivontae Manuel are both doing well and on track to graduate Thursday, Dec. 19.
