The Calhoun School hosted RC Hatch on Nov. 12, scooping up a win in one out of three games.
The varsity Tigers fell 86-81 to the Bobcats despite big strong performances by senior Tyler Robertson and freshman Jamal Mason.
“The highlight of the game for me was my freshman guard, Jamal Mason,” said coach Jakeem Davison. “It was his first time playing varsity and he had 24 points, five rebounds and six steals.”
Robertson, always strong on the court, managed 36 points and 21 rebounds, posting a 33% three-point shooting accuracy.
Davison said the team has focused on building during practices, with many of the same student-athletes the Tigers fielded for football coming out strong on the basketball court.
“Our main focus has been team chemistry and defense,” Davison said. “We have two seniors, but we have a lot of new players this year, so we have to mix in the new with the experienced.”
The Lady Tigers also fell against Hatch, 53-45. The JV team fared better, with a 17-15 win.
“All of them were close games,” said athletic director Ervin Starr. “We had a lot of those guys coming from football. They’ve got to kind of work their way back into basketball shape and readjust to the sport.”
At press time, the Tigers traveled to face the Keith Bears. Their next match will take them down the road to meet the Luverne Tigers on Dec. 6.
