At its annual Christmas meeting held Dec. 4, the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council presented a Hayneville Middle School sixth grader with its November Character in Action Award.
Eleven-year-old Romilia Myles received the award for the “lovely and compassionate” character she displays among her peers. Teachers Asia Davis-Jones and Quarnitrea Spagner nominated Myles for behaviors they observed in the classroom.
“Romilia Myles is a lovely and compassionate student,” the nomination explained. “She is dedicated to volunteering at her church, and she loves God.”
According to her teachers, Myles assists those with learning difficulties who struggle to understand. She is described as incredibly intelligent, someone who applies what she has learned in the classroom and her everyday life.
“Romilia is loving, trustworthy and courteous,” nominators said. “She inspires people to achieve and is a leader among her peers. Romilia usually greets her teachers with a grin and an optimistic outlook.”
District Judge Adrian Johnson, who chairs the council, said the Character in Action award was implemented to recognize students who exhibit good character inside and outside the classroom. The award honors students who are not always seen as the top academic or athletic achievers, but who model positive behaviors in their school and community.
Myles performs well in the classroom as someone who is both efficient and well organized. Her teachers say she is devoted to hard work, thoughtful before acting and adept at problem solving.
“Her academic performance, attendance, engagement in class, and grades are all exceptional,” nominators said.
