Twelve middle and high school basketball teams met at Central High School in Hayneville Saturday to compete in a tournament honoring the late coach, educator and principal Toriano “Tito” Baker. According to Lowndes County Athletic Director Ervin Starr, the 4th annual Toriano “Tito” Baker Memorial Classic provided a day full of impressive athleticism and community support for the student-athletes.
“We had a great number of [Baker’s] family to come,” Starr said. “They were all in their hoodies showing support for him and his memory. It was a great day of competition.
Local schools — Lownes Middle, Hayneville Middle, The Calhoun School and Central — competed in boys’ and girls’ basketball contests. Also invited to the tournament were boys’ and girls’ varsity teams from J.F. Shields and Wilcox-Central.
“We had great participation from the PTA,” Starr said. “They ran the concessions and helped greet people as they came in. Mr. Curtis, the principal, and Coach [Brian] Coleman made everyone comfortable.”
The Baker family awarded trophies to the winner of each matchup.
“After each game, we asked the [Baker] family to come down and take a picture,” Starr said. “They were very gracious. They had a smile on their faces the whole day and it was a great day of honoring coach Baker, remembering him and fellowshipping with our family and friends.
Game outcomes were:
* Middle School Girls: Lowndes Middle over Hayneville Middle, 46 – 22
