Lowndesboro welcomed a new mayor in August. Ed McCurdy assumed the office after longtime mayor Anne Spooner stepped down.
McCurdy, a Lowndesboro native and the nephew of former mayor and current council member Caswell McCurdy, was serving on the town’s council when Spooner announced she would be stepping down and relocating closer to her extended family.
“We hate very much to lose Anne,” McCurdy said. “I plugged in [after she stepped down].”
McCurdy enjoyed a long, nearly 40-year career in banking, living in Selma with his wife Patty before retirement. The couple moved back home to Lowndes County about two years ago and Ed has been active in local government while Patty continues her work with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
“We decided to move back to Lowndesboro and [Mayor Spooner] asked me to serve on the planning commission and update the zoning ordinance and other things which had not been updated in years,” McCurdy said. He eventually was elected as chairman of the planning commission and was in place to assume the role of mayor after Spooner’s decision to step down.
“When Anne decided to move closer to her family, she asked if she could appoint me for the remainder of her term,” he said.
