The Black Belt Unincorporated Wastewater Program (BBUWP) ended 2024 by holding its annual meeting Dec 18, 2024. The event, hosted by the Southview Worship Center in Hayneville, saw a record crowd who came out to hear the program’s year-end reports and enjoy fellowship and door prizes.

“It was the best [annual meeting] we have ever had,” said BBUWP executive director Sherry Bradley. “People told me after, and some emailed to say it was a good meeting.

“We had fun. We kept it at one hour and 15 minutes, including giving away prizes playing games.”

Before the member’s meeting, BBUWP board members met with the program’s accounting firm to review a recent audit.

Dr. Lilia Abron, the first Black woman to earn a PhD in chemical engineering (1972) and COO of BBUWP, attended the meeting, Bradley said, to meet members and answer questions.

The meeting was a way to thank members, Bradley explained. All families present received collard greens, sweet potatoes and a bag of food.

“We wanted to thank the members who have received septic systems and are happy to be clients,” Bradley said. “They are the families of BBUWP. The meeting was our way to say, ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Here’s a gift for you.’”
