Dear Amy,
I’m a new parent, and I love sharing photos of my baby online. The problem is, my friend keeps “editing” the pictures I post. She adds filters, captions and even turns my baby into memes without asking me first. It’s starting to feel disrespectful. How can I get her to stop?
Sincerely, Baby Isn’t a Meme
Dear Baby Isn’t a Meme,
First, turn the tables. Start editing her selfies. Add some vintage Comic Sans captions like, “Live, Laugh, Love!” or “Monday Mood: Unfiltered,” and plaster them all over your social media. Bonus points if you tag her boss or grandma for maximum embarrassment.
Alternatively, begin “Photoshopping” completely absurd scenarios into your baby’s photos before she can get to them. Think “Baby in Space,” “Baby at the Oscars,” or “Baby Riding a Velociraptor.” When your friend tries to add her filters, they’ll pale in comparison to your avant-garde masterpieces.
For a more dramatic flair, hire an actor to show up at her house dressed as your baby’s “legal representative.” Have them deliver a cease-and-desist letter in baby talk: “Goo goo gaa gaa— stop it or face da consequences.” It’s both hilarious and intimidating.
For actual advice: Your friend may not realize how her edits make you feel. Have an honest conversation with her and set clear boundaries. Say something like, “I know you mean well, but these edits make me uncomfortable. I’d appreciate it if you’d leave my baby’s photos as they are.”
Remember, it’s your child, your photos and your call. If she doesn’t respect your wishes, consider limiting her access to your posts by adjusting your privacy settings. Being a parent comes with enough challenges — turning your baby into a meme factory shouldn’t be one of them.
Best of bad advice,
Amy
