“We didn’t play with any enthusiasm,” said a disappointed Bill Williamson, head football coach for The Calhoun School, after his team came out on the short end of a 50-6 thrashing at the hands of Elba at home Friday night.

The Elba Tigers drew first blood on a 19-yard Austin Johnson to Reid Rials pass.

The visiting Tigers led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, but stretched that lead to 34-0 at the half.

Calhoun finally got on the scoreboard at the 10:15 mark of the third quarter when Jamine Jordan took an Elba kickoff all the way for a score. But a 2-point conversion try failed making it a 42-6 contest.

Elba closed out the scoring on 14-yard Johnson to Lucas Simpson touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion to make it a 50-6 final.

Williamson said his quarterback, Jordan, is a good ball player, but “this was not one of his better games,” he said.

Still, Williamson is optimistic about the end of the season.

“We’ve got a chance in these last two ballgames,” he said. But he stressed, “We’ve got to play a lot better than we played tonight.”

Williamson’s 1-7 Tigers will face archrival Central-Hayneville on the road this coming Friday night in Hayneville and will host Francis Marion for the last game of the season.

Williamson said he was “disappointed” with the Elba contest.
