County backs Obama, Sewell in election

Lowndes County voters went big on Tuesday for President Barack Obama, who earned re-election as President of the United States despite his failure to carry the state of Alabama, and for Democrat U.S. Representative Terri A. Sewell.
While Alabama as a state went for Republican Mitt Romney, according to media reports, Obama carried Lowndes County with 76.41 percent of the vote.
In Lowndes County, Obama defeated Romney 5,747 to 1,754.
Straight party voting in Lowndes County favored the Democrats as well, with Democrats getting 85.27 percent of the straight party voting 4,208 to 727 who voted straight Republican.
Sewell won re-election to her 7th District Congressional seat, according to media reports, and carried Lowndes County with 79.02 percent of the vote. She defeated Republican Don Chamberlain in Lowndes County 5,681 to 1,503.
While Republican Roy Moore won election as Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, according to media reports, Democrat Bob Vance carried Lowndes County with 78.63 percent of the vote. He defeated Moore in Lowndes County 5,657 to 1,534.
Also while Republican Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh won election as President of the Public Service Commission in Alabama, according to media reports, Lowndes County went for Democrat Lucy Baxley with 77.05 percent of the vote. She defeated Cavanaugh in Lowndes County 5,415 to 1,609.
According to media reports, all but one of the state amendments passed statewide except for Amendment Four.
Lowndes County went along with the rest of the state in defeating Amendment Four to remove vestiges of segregation from the state’s constitution.
The AEA believed this amendment would also remove the state’s obligation to provide public education.
The amendment failed in Lowndes County with 78.36 percent of the vote being “no” 4,806 to 1,327.
Lowndes County voters also opposed amendments three, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 and 11, which all passed statewide.
In Lowndes County the votes against Amendment Three were 2,476 to 2,098; against Amendment Six, 3,304 to 1,895; against Amendment Seven, 3,060 to 2,024; against Amendment Eight, 2,956 to 2,222; against Amendment Nine, 2,877 to 2,079; against Amendment 10, 2,840 to 2,010; and against Amendment 11, 2,536 to 1,866.
Lowndes County voting results were provided by the office of Lowndes County Probate Court and were based on 13 of 14 boxes counted. A total of 7,570 ballots were cast in Lowndes County.
