Tigers sweep Lions at home

The Calhoun High School Tigers put an exclamation mark on a clean sweep of their cross-county rivals, the Central High School Lions, in Saturday basketball action played on the Tigers’ home turf in Letohatchee.
The Tigers jumped out to a 35-22 lead at the half en route to a 78-50 blowout of Central in varsity boys action.
The victory lifted the Tigers to 11 – 6 overall and 1-0 in 2A Area 6 play. The Tigers will host Luverne this Thursday night, Jan. 10.
The loss dropped the Central Lions to 7-8 overall.
Central is slated to play at Luverne on Tuesday, Jan. 8 and return the favor to Calhoun by hosting the Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 12.
For Calhoun, JaKeem Davison scored 20 points, Jamine Jordan 19, DeAngelo Miles 11 and Jamichael Jordan 10.
For Central Terraris Saffold scored 11 points and Michael Rush 10.
“I think Calhoun played a good game tonight. They’ve got a lot of good athletes,” Central head basketball coach Toriano Baker said. “They showed us where we need to work and to get better. We’ll just try to keep working and try to get better for playoffs.”
Calhoun head basketball coach Jim Hunter attributed the success of his team Saturday to the “loss of shot blockers” for Central.
The Calhoun Junior Varsity Boys dropped the Lions 55-33 with D. Haygood and D. Smith scoring 10 points each for Calhoun.
Central’s Calvin Harris scored eight 8 points for the JV Lions.
The Calhoun Varsity Girls held off a stubborn Central Lions team 40-35.
Valenciya Allen scored 12 points to lead the Calhoun Tigers while Tia Thicklin scored 10 points for Central.
The Lady Tigers are 6-11 on the season.
