Central sweeps Calhoun at home

The Central High School Lions returned the favor to Calhoun by following up a clean sweep by Calhoun in Letohatchee on Saturday, Jan. 5 with a clean sweep by Central in Hayneville (Mosses) on Saturday, Jan. 12.
The Central varsity boys defeated Calhoun 73-63 to improve to 8-9 on the season. The Central varsity girls defeated Calhoun 43-37 to improve the 6-8. And the Central junior varsity boys defeated Calhoun 49-40.
The Central Lions varsity boys came out strong leading Calhoun 20 – 11 in the first quarter and by a margin of 42-26 at the half.
The Lions pulled ahead 66-44 in the third quarter and held off Calhoun 73-63 for the win.
Terraris Saffold led Central with 19 points while Rico Knight led Calhoun with 14 points.
The win improved Central to 8-9 on the season.
Calhoun head basketball coach Jim Hunter said the reversal of fortunes by the two teams was “a tale of two faces.” He said his team hit its shots last time the two met, while Central hit their shots this time. “They were the hottest and most aggressive team tonight,” Hunter said.
Central head basketball coach Toriano Baker said his team learned from their last encounter with Calhoun.
“We looked at the last game and saw that we didn’t play out best game,” he said. “We looked at the film, made some adjustments and our guys came out and played really hard,” Baker said.
Baker said Calhoun is still one of the top teams in the area. He said it was a very competitive game, and, “We look to play them in the playoffs if playoffs roll in their favor or our favor.”
The Central High Lions junior varsity boys defeated Calhoun 49-40 with Calvin Harris leading Central with 21 points.
The Central Lady Lions held off Calhoun 43-37 with Latasha Coleman leading Central with 17 points while Valenciya Allen scored 14 for the Tigers.
The win improved the Lady Lions to 6-8 on the season.
Calhoun was slated to face Highland Home at home on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and play Luverne on the road on Friday, Jan. 18.
Central was slated to face Luverne at home on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Highland Home away on Thursday, Jan. 17.
