Organizers continue work on “Relaying Around the World”

Plans continue for the 2013 Lowndes County Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society on Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Russell Baseball Complex in Hayneville.

This year’s theme is “Relaying Around The World,” the goal is $43,000 and as of now 15 teams are onboard for the event, according to Zandra Colston, co-chairman of the event along with Lakeisha McCovery.

A planning meeting was held for the Lowndes County Relay for Life on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Hayneville Town Hall.

Colston said following that meeting that more teams are needed to reach a goal of 21 participating teams.

“We are still looking for sponsors, new teams, volunteers, entertainment and survivors,” Colston said.

She said teams so far include:

Charles Smith Courthouse Annex – Linda Maddox; DHR Stars – Jackie Lee; Yolanda Thomas Crusaders/Friendship Baptist Church – Amy James; Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church – Vera Mickles; Pink Flamingos – Laura Gresham; Fighting to Win – Glenda McMeans; Educators Against Cancer 2013 – Bernard Mitchell; SABIC – Kristy Brown; Lt. Green’s Army – Ardrell Greene; Snow Hillians Angels – Floretta Timmons; Hinson’s Heroes – Eddie Hinson; Rock Creek Conquers – Willease Cabble; SWAC – Suoliver Jackson; New Age Hippy – Mary Thompson; and Granny Warriors – Geraldine Lusane.

Colston said the Survivor’s Banquet will be held on Saturday, March 23rd at the Hayneville Plaza at 4 p.m.

She said the banquet theme will be “An Evening In Purple.” So, “Come dressed in your purple, she said.

Colston also said all survivors need to register at www.relayforlife.org/lowndesal or call her (Zandra Colston) at 334-315-0962 by Friday, March 1st.

She said Luminaria/Sky Lanterns chaired by Shirley McCall will hold a pre-sale March 1st throughout the community. Luminaria are $5 and Sky Lanterns are $15 each.

On relay night, “We are having an auction of baked goods from the best bakers in the county and a quilt sponsored by Snow Hill Christian Church, Dr. Dale Braxton, pastor,” Colston said.

She encourages everyone to enter his or her best cake or pie in the auction.

She said the Relay for Life will be held from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. and needed are groups and individuals to perform, as well as people to sponsor hours between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. (with food/entertainment).

Colston said the goal is to have at least 21 teams this year by signing up churches, companies, youth groups, social clubs, organizations and more.

She said the next Lowndes County Relay for Life meeting will be held Tuesday, March 12 at Hayneville Town Hall beginning at 6 p.m.
