Election results are in and although a majority of our local public officials will retain their current positions, Lowndes County will soon see a new Sheriff in town.

John “Big John” Williams won in a landslide victory with an astounding 3,316 votes, on June 1 in his race against Harold Bell, Charlie “Chip” Williams and B.C. Cooper.

Charlie “Chip” Williams received 803 votes, Bell won 350 votes and Cooper acquired 58 votes.

“I appreciate the support from Lowndes County in electing me Sheriff,” said Williams. “Everyone said they wanted a new Sheriff…so they took it to the polls.”

As votes were tallied, voters could be heard inside and outside of the courthouse asking each other, “how long?”…”soon,” someone would reply. This was the primary slogan of “Big John’s” campaign.

Lowndes County Sheriff Charlie “Chip” Williams commented on “Big John’s” victory at the polls.
“We will be gone in January,” said Chip. “I wish Big John the best of luck.”

Numerous groups of people camped under canopies could be found at polling stations across the county in an effort to encourage voters to cast ballots in favor of specific candidates.

About half of Lowndes County’s registered voters, 4,753, turned out at today’s polls and a strong majority, 4,255, voted for Democratic candidates.
