The 19th century Lowndesboro School received a $5,000 grant from the Alabama Historical Commission funded by the State of Alabama’s 2015 Capital Enhancement Program for historical properties and sites.
The Alabama Historical Commission protects, preserves, and interprets Alabama’s historic places and is the State Historic Preservation Office.
According to The Elmore Bolling Foundation, the historic school was added to the National Register of Historic places last year in May.
The school, aided by a contribution from the Freedmen’s Bureau, was built in 1883 for African American children. Dr. Mansfield Tyler, a former slave and member of the Alabama House of Representatives is credited with establishing a church in 1868, in which the school operated until it was built on property formerly known as The Male Academy Lot in Lowndesboro.
Mr. & Mrs. Lucius Evans donated the school to The Elmore Bolling Foundation (501 © 3) for preservation and restoration in 2011. Emergency stabilization grants have been used to shore up the foundation.
Additional funding is solicited to provide roofing to prevent further damage to the exterior and interior of the building.
