In Friday, Oct. 9 football action, all three Lowndes County teams took it on the chin at home.
Central fell at homecoming to Goshen 40-0 to go 0-5 in Class 2A Region 3 and 0-7 overall.
Following a contest that saw a Central Lion squad pretty much self destruct, all Central head football coach Martez Graham could say was, “The boys didn’t show up to play.”
Despite giving up a safety and a muffed punt that led to a Goshen Eagles score, the Lions only trailed 9-0 at the half.
But an interception, safety, kickoff return, a short punt, one touchdown pass and a third safety saw Goshen add 31 unanswered points in the second half.
About the only highlights were an interception and a fumble recovery by the Lions’ Laddrius Cole.
The Lions travel next Friday to face regional opponent New Brockton.
Calhoun fell at home to Highland Home 56-32 to go 0-5 in Class 2A Region 3 and 0-7 overall.
For the home standing Tigers, Quintarrius Arrington had 80 yards passing and two touchdowns on passes to Arthur Phifer and Gnald Sharpe. Phifer had 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Sharpe had two touchdowns and 175 yards receiving.
Lewis Smith had one touchdown, stripped a fumble for 30 yards and had 50 yards receiving.
Demarco Jiles had 200 yards passing and two touchdowns. And Dailan Carter had two 2-point conversion runs.
“We played better, but when you turn the ball over four times on interceptions and downs with short yardage, it is hard to recover,” said Calhoun head football coach Dewayne Williams. “We are going to continue to plug away at this until we win one.”
Calhoun will travel next Friday to face regional opponent Elba.
Lowndes Academy fell at home to regional opponent Sparta 40-20 to go 2-3 in Class A Region 2 of the AISA and 3-4 overall.
The Rebels could not keep up with the Warriors offensively in this contest scoring all of their points in the first and third quarters.
The Rebels trailed 18 to 7 in the first quarter and at the half, closed to 26-20 in the third quarter, but gave up two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 40-20 final.
The lone Rebel touchdown of the first half came on a 1-yard first quarter run by Brandon Reid. John Taylor added the point after.
Down 26-7 in the third quarter, Wade Howard hit Brian Rayburn with a 43-yard touchdown strike, and Taylor added the point after to make it a 26-14 contest. Then Howard hit Gray Johnson with a 16-yard touchdown pass to pull the contest in reach at 26-20. But it was all Warriors from there.
Lowndes Academy head football coach Bob Taylor said, “Sparta is a good football team and did a great job against uson offense. We will continue to work hard to keep improving.”
For the Rebels, Howard completed 16 of 33 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Reid rushed 13 times for 18 yards and one touchdown. David Hussey rushed twice for 6 yards.
On defense for the Rebels, Owen Nall had 11 tackles and one assist, Hussey had seven tackles, Reid had three tackles and two assists, Trey Gothard and Mason McCurdy had three tackles, Johnson had two tackles and two assists, Jimbo Wheeler had two tackles and one assist and Rayburn and Alex Thrash had one tackle each.
Cole Crook had one tackle, one assist and a sack.
The Rebels travel next Friday to face regional opponent Sumter.
