Operation Migration – an aircaft guided migration flyover by Whooping Cranes in the Black Belt will be over Lowndes County early Wednesday morning.
The cranes are expected to fly out of Lowndes county at 912 Alabama Highway 97, about a mile north of Hayneville on Jan. 13.
Mike Perrin of Alabama Black Belt Adventures said, “Birders and other nature lovers should get up early to get a chance to see a flyover of some majestic Whooping Crane as they make their way through Alabama’s Black Belt on their way to their winter home in Florida.”
He said the cranes would be led by a pilot in an ultralight plane, weather permitting with the last stop being in Pike County. He said he expected the flyover to take place at 6:45 a.m.
Perrin said the cranes left Green Lake County, Wisc. on Sept. 1 and are headed to st. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in the Florida Panhandle.
According to the blog In The Field With Operation Migration, it looks as if weather will be favorable Wednesday morning to advance to the next migration stop in Pike County.
The public flyover location is 912 State Hwy 97, Hayneville one mile north of Hayneville. Look for a very large pond on Hwy 97 – the driveway entrance has a brick column on either side.
