Just like the boys tournament played at Central, it will be an all Lowndes County AHSAA Class 2-Area 6 Girls Basketball Championship on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.at Calhoun High.
Like the boys, the championship game tonight, Thursday, Feb. 11, the girls area championship game will feature arch rivals Calhoun against Central on Friday night.
The Calhoun Lady Tigers defeated Highland Home 68-43, and the Central Lady Lions took Luverne in overtime 56-51 Wednesday night at Calhoun High.
Calhoun was led by Jamiya Smith with 19 points, Toni Young with 15 points and Amber Harris with 14 points.
Highland Home was led by Jala Merriweather with 15 points.
The Central Lady Lions had to take the Luverne Lady Tigers to overtime to come away with a 56-51 win.
Central was led by Derrica McCall with 16 points and Melody Walker with 14 points.
Luverne was led by Nyjah Thomas with 21 points.
Following Central’s overtime win, about all Central Lady Lions head basketball coach Trent Woodley could say was, “It was a hard fought game. Nobody expected us to win. So, I’m very proud of them.”
He recognized the play of Derrica McCall and Cordasia Harris, who made two key free throws in the game. But he said his entire team played well.
Of an all Lowndes County girls area championship, Calhoun Lady Tigers head basketball coach Eddie Howard said, “To me personally, it is good for the community. Both schools’ parents can come out and enjoy something that their kids are doing.”
He said, however, his team came out flat in their game with Highland Home. He said he wanted to play everybody and get back to basics of the things his Lady Tigers have been winning with. He said, “We can’t keep waiting until the second or third quarter to start playing basketball.”
