BOE recognizes quarterly award winners

The Lowndes County Board of Education recognized quarterly award winners, spelling bee winners and as resolution in memory of a teacher at its Thursday, Feb. 11 meeting.
Quarterly Award winners recognized were: Student of the Quarter Jadyn Wheeler of Fort Deposit Elementary School; Parent or Guardian of the Quarter, Gladys Johnson of The Calhoun School; Volunteer of the Quarter, Cynthia Moorer of Jackson-Steele Elementary School; Support Personnel of the Quarter, Lamont Bracy of Fort Deposit Elementary School; Teacher of the Quarter, Ursula Goldsmith of Lowndes County Middle School; Principal of the Quarter, Bessie Morgan of Jackson-Steele Elementary School; and Administrator of the Quarter, Director of Student Services Harvey Means of the Central Office.
Lowndes County school Superintendent Dr. Daniel Boyd announced spelling bee winners including
first place, Ayanna Walker, a sixth grader at Hayneville Middle School; second place, Mia Rose, a sixth grader at Hayneville Middle School and third place, Ambrose Fletcher, a seventh grader at Hayneville Middle School.
Boyd also announced the third annual Dr. Luke N. Taylor Black History Oratorical Contest will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 27 at the Central Office Auditorium.
The school board approved a resolution in memory of retired teacher Peggy McReynolds Johnson, which was received was by her brother, Thomas McReynolds. Johnson died on January 19, 2016.
Boyd reported receipt of an annual $20,000 appropriation from the Lowndes County Commission for the support of the Central Office and reported that the Failing Schools List did not have any Lowndes County schools on it.
Under action items, the board approved:
Policy Revisions including a change in the term indefinite suspension term to expulsion, Safety, Transfers and Withdrawals, Due Process, Conduct, Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program, Sexual Harassment, Classification of Violations and Sanctions.
Changes in title of supervisors: Transportation Utility Worker, Transportation Shop Assistant, Courier/Bus Driver and Bus Aide.

The board also approved: A Lowndes County BOE Head Start 2016-2017 Grant Application for $1,966,586; Amendment One to FY 2016 Annual Budget; December 2015 Financial Statement, Profit & Loss Detail Report and Check Detail Report for the Lowndes County Head Start Program;
Revenues and Expenditures Report, Financial Statement and Payroll Register December 2015 – based on reconciled bank statements; and personnel report.
The next meeting will be held March 10 at Fort Deposit Elementary School.
