Lowndes County District Court Judge Adrian D. Johnson recently recognized Demetrius Smith, a 12th grade student at The Calhoun High School, as Lowndes County’s February Character In Action honoree.
According to Calhoun Principal Nicholas Townsend, Smith is involved in many different activities outside of his academic duties. He currently has a 2.29 grade point average and is ranked 33 in a graduating class of 58.
Townsend said, “Demetrius is an extremely hard worker” and “is a leader on the school football and basketball team who encourages others and leads by example.”
Also according to Townsend, Demetrius is always willing to lend a helping hand and was one of five of star pupils who participated in several after-hours school events for the district.
He said, “Demetrius is extremely polite and carries himself with Tiger Pride no matter his surroundings. In a time where young black males have lost their way, it is great to see a student like, Demetrius Smith, who can transcend negativity and be the all around student that all children have the potential to be.”
The Character In Action program recognizes those students in Lowndes County who have demonstrated outstanding character in their school, church or community.
According to Johnson, “By highlighting the achievements of our outstanding students, we hope to encourage others to have a positive impact on the community.”
