Alyssa Luckie of Lowndesboro recently completed the eight-week Huntsville Rural Pre-medical Internship of the UAB School of Medicine, Huntsville Regional Medical Campus.

According to the UAB School of Medicine, this highly competitive program provides pre-medical college students from small communities a broad exposure to medicine which, hopefully, will inspire them to careers as physicians practicing in rural Alabama.

Luckie, 19, is a junior at Troy University majoring in biomedical sciences. She is the daughter of Rene and Ricky Luckie.

She shadowed with Dr. Amanda Wilcox in Prattville. The interns spent 150 hours in June and July shadowing and learning from physicians and other medical professionals at UAB School of Medicine – Huntsville, as well as private physicians the students’ home towns.

The Huntsville Rural Pre-medical Internship has accepted pre-medical students every summer since 1992. Nearly 65 percent of these students have been accepted to medical school. Eligible students must have be from rural or small-town areas of Alabama, have completed at least their sophomore year of college and have a demonstrated interest in becoming a physician.
