Incumber mayors in Fort Deposit and Hayneville won reelection Tuesday night in runoff municipal elections.
In the race for mayor of Fort Deposit, Fletcher Fountain defeated Barry Robinson with 458 votes to 324 votes. Fountain received 259 absentee ballots to 36 for Robinson.
In the race for mayor of Hayneville David Daniel defeated Shewillius Willie Payton 288 votes to 187 votes. Daniel received 79 absentee ballots to 94 for Payton.
”We are very elated that the people of Fort Deposit have spoken tonight,” Fountain said. “And they know Mayor Fountain has been a pretty good mayor, and he hasn’t made any promises he had not kept.”
Fountain said he wanted to thank the people of Fort Deposit for their support and that this will be his last run. He said he promised to give 100 percent and expected the people of Fort Deposit to groom someone else over the next four years.
He said this would make his fifth term as mayor giving him a total of 20 years in office.
Daniel, who served the two-year remainder of Kelvin Lawrence’s term after Lawrence won election to House District 69, said he wants to continue the economic development of Hayneville and bring a dialysis center to the town.
Daniel said of his election, “I feel like the people are saying that they want economic growth…want that to continue to create jobs; they want a dialysis center; and they want new (water) meters; they want the good things we had started for Hayneville.”
