The Lowndes Academy Rebels opened the 2018 season Friday, Aug. 24 under first-year head football coach Shane Moye with a 39-0 shutout of the Sparta Warriors on the road in Evergreen.
The Rebels, stepping up from Class A to Class AA, Region 2 this season, held Class A Sparta to a negative 15 yards on offense and one first down.
The Rebels’ defense was led by senior Mason McCurdy with nine tackles and both junior Gus Page and senior Daniel Calloway with seven tackles each.
“Gus was awesome tonight at outside linebacker,” Moye said. And, “Offensively we never punted.”
The Rebels had 420 yards of offense with 300 yards rushing and 100 yards passing.
Junior running back Daniels Janes had two 26-yard rushing touchdowns, three carries for 72 yards and two receptions for 45 yards.
McCurdy had a 57-yard rushing touchdown run, junior John Morgan had an 11-yard rushing touchdown, senior Zack Miller had a 47-yard receiving touchdown. And senior Calloway had a 22-yard fumble return.
The Rebels’ Rostik Smith added three point after touchdown kicks.
However, Moye said, “We had four fumbles. So, we have to clean up on the turnovers.”
Moye said no one on his team had more than five touches of the football with Mason, Morgan, Janes, junior Trevor Haney and Miller all having about five touches each.
Moye said senior quarterback Tyler smith lead the Rebels’ offense with “good poise and leadership.”
He said he was really proud of his kids, who played hard and that he hopes to continue to build on that hard work week in and week out.
The Rebels previously downed the Fort Dale Eagles in a pre-season scrimmage at home on Friday, Aug. 17, 27-0. They will host the Evangel Lions in Hayneville on Friday, Aug. 31.
