Despite losing its season opener 41-0 to Pike Road at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Friday, Aug. 31, first-year Central High head football Michael Perry Jr. found some positives to take from the game.

“We took away from Friday’s game having accomplished some of our smalls goals that were set such as playing hard every snap, being able to have film to determined what type of team we have and learning what type of personnel we will have.”

Perry said of his Lions, “No one individual played better than the other, but we did have some groups to stand out.” They included the offensive line and all special teams, he said.

“With the score being 41-0, some may wonder how the offensive line played well?,” Perry said. His answer, “We had a lot of holes to run in. The backs just were missing the holes that were created.”

Perry said Pike Road has a great team, they are well coached and they are at a place toward which Central is head…” the right direction.”

The next game for Central, regional opponent Highland Home on the road this Friday, Sept. 7 “is the most important game of the year,” Perry said, “because it’s the next game.” He said, “We will prepare the same each week.”

All of the points scored by Pike Road this past Friday came in the first half.

The Lions had 58 yards of total offense, all from rushing and suffered three fumbles lost and tossed one interception.

Quarterback Justin Taylor went zero for four passing and tossed the interception.

Daylan Preyear rushed six times for 36 yards; Taylor rushed four times for 15 yards, Diontavious Holcombe rushed three times for 4 yards; Hugh Smith rushed two times for 2 yards and Ronald Brown rushed three times for 1 yard.

Defensively Preyear had nine tackles, one assist and four tackles for loss; Londell Hill had four tackles, three assists and one tackle for loss; Reshard Moore had three tackles and three assists; Hugh Smith had four tackles and one assist; Keniyous Surles had three tackles and one assist; Diontavious Holcombe had two tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss; Swanique Gordon had two tackles; DeMarcus Young had one tackle and one assist; and Taylor had three blocks.

De’Sammieon Simpson had one kick return for 14 yards.
