The 0-2, 0-1 Class 2A Region 3 football Calhoun Tiger football team lost to regional opponent Samson High School at home Friday night, Sept. 7 by a score of 57-0. But Calhoun head football coach Ervin Starr is encouraged.

While Samson scored on every possession in the first half, including a safety, to take a 44-0 lead at the half, Starr said, “There was some bright spots during the game” by his team, which he said, “just had too many costly mistakes.”

Starr said the Tigers’ young offensive line (Cedric Boone (eighth grade), Quentavious Washington (a freshman), Kelajaijuan Coleman (a freshman), JaMichael Freeman (a freshman) and Eddarius Simpson (a sophomore) all showed “flashes” of becoming a solid unit.

He said, “Each of those youngsters are improving each day and looking like the core group that will help Calhoun win some football games.”

More, Starr said, Eddarius Simpson, 6′ 200-pound freshman, has earned a spot as one of the team captains.

“He has really impressed the coaching staff as well as his teammates,” Starr said, “with (his) work ethic in practice and great performances in each of the first two games this season.”

He also said senior tight end DeAndre McCovery is becoming the “go to guy” in the Tigers’ passing game. And at 6’3”, 215-pounds is becoming a match-up problem for some defensive backs.

Starr said the Tigers’ run game is by committee at this point with no particular back wanting to take the lead.

But he said junior quarterback Travon Brown continued to look unshaken again, as he faced heavy pressure all night.

And Freshman, Robert Lewis, is also showing signs that he is going to a star on the defensive side of the ball.

The Tigers have lost their last 33 ball games. And this Friday, Sept. 14, they will be on the road to face regional opponent Highland Home.
