The Lowndes County Commission determined that a beer license request will have to go to the town of Lowndesboro, discussed Young Smith Road issues with Jerry Heath, discussed garbage collection issues with a Liberty Disposal representative, discussed road projects and issues with County Engineer David Butts and approved appropriations for Christmas Parades at its regular Monday, Nov. 26 meeting.

The commission determined a beer license request from BP Food Mart at 20 U.S. Highway 80 will have to go before the Lowndesboro Town Council as the business is located in Lowndesboro.

After a lengthy discussion with county resident Jerry Heath over water washing out Young Smith Road, Commission Chairman Carnell McAlpine asked County Engineer David Butts to get with Heath about his issues. And County Administrator Jackie Thomas told Health she would get with him regarding a question about employee salaries.

Heath was also told he could contact either Butts or Commissioner Robert Harris about his road issues.

Harris questioned Alaron Hubbert, a Liberty Disposal Inc. representative, about locations in the White Hall area where he said garbage is not being collected in a timely manner.

Hubbert agreed to look into to matter. And Harris asked that Liberty stay within the boundaries of its contract regarding garbage collection timeliness.

Butts reported that a culvert in need of repair on Lowndes County Road 17 should be let for bid in February.  He also said plans for County Road 32 should be issued by the end of the week.

Harris asked Butts about conditions on Lowndes County Road 40, which Butts said had “gotten worse.” However, County Administrator Thomas acknowledged that promised funds in the amount of $55,558.16 have been received from Alabama Sand and Gravel for County Road 40 road repair.

Butts also said he felt it was best to let trucks do what they are going to do to Lowndes County 40 until such time as they are off the road and then make repairs.

Alabama Sand and Gravel is expected to begin utilizing a rail spurt at its Meadows Property site which is anticipated take much truck traffic off County Road 40.

Butt also said he felt the county has done it part in notifying drivers that the road is in rough condition.

Under the consent agenda, the commission approved appropriation to the Town of Hayneville in amount of $600 and Town of White Hall in the amount of $250 for their Christmas Parades.

Hayneville’s parade is Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. and White Hall’s parade will be Dec. 15 at 11 a.m.

Harris appropriated $250 to Hayneville and White Hall each. Commissioner Joshua Simmons appropriated $150 for Hayneville. And McAlpine appropriated $200 for Hayneville.

Commissioner Dickson Farrior reported on a VIP event held prior to the commission meeting at ACE Hardware.

The new hardware business in Hayneville was set for a soft opening on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Farrior said of the ACE location, “We went from a condemned building that was a detriment to the community and the county to a building that is employing people in a beautiful new building that is going to create tax revenue.”

He said the commission did a good job on making it happened and asked that his comments be included in the minutes.

The commission went into executive session for legal strategy but took no action.
