It’s time again for the seventh annual Lowndes County Turkey Rodeo.
The 2019 event will be held Saturday, March 23 at Harrell and Sons Farm in Hayneville off Alabama Highway 97. And this year, the weigh-in will be broadcast by “Big Daddy” Lawyer.
The rodeo will consist of two-man teams who can hunt together or alone but rejoin at the weigh-in. Teams decide where to hunt, “rain or shine.” And teams must weigh-in after 10 a.m. and before 12 noon.
The entry fee is $100 per team, and each team will be assigned a number to be used to identify their team’s turkeys. And a tag with the team’s number and names will be placed on a turkey’s leg when that turkey is scored.
The entry fee also includes T-shirts and lunch for team members. Cash prizes will be paid out for the top three teams and the largest double. Only one turkey per team out of a double will be eligible for first, second or third place.
All birds must be killed on the morning of March 23. Birds will be scored by calculating spurs times 10, plus longest beard times two plus weight. In the event of multiple beards, only the longest beard will be scored.
Kyle Harrell said last year 50 two-man teams participated in the event and killed a total of 16 turkeys. “We are really looking forward to this year. Hopefully, we will have just as man teams entered.”
Harrell said the purpose of the turkey rodeo is to be a “fun event” for the community. He said, “Turkey hunters enjoy getting together, sharing their hunting stories and enjoying a good meal.”
He said “Big Daddy” Lawler will be the master of ceremonies.
Harrell said payouts will be in cash, two 12-gauge Mossberg pump shotguns, coolers and trunk tool boxes.
