Relay For Life is coming to Lowndes County and takes place Friday.

Things kick off around 6 p.m. at the Russell Baseball Complex in Hayneville and the theme is “Tailgate for a Cure.”

According to organizers, this year’s goal is to raise $55,000 to help the American Cancer Society. The 2018 Lowndes County Relay For Life raised more than $58,000.

Last year, there were 14 teams this year that ran, walked, jogged and danced their way around the track and 18 sponsors of the event. There was inspirational recognition of cancer survivors and luminaries placed.

As always, area churches and organizations will make sure there is plenty to eat for the participants.

Relay For Life is a grass roots community-based team event and consists of a variety of activities, according to the American Cancer Society. The opening ceremony kicks off the event by honoring everyone who has been affected by cancer and everyone who has contributed to the success of Relay For Life.

Survivors and caregivers are the heart and soul of Relay, and they will be honored with the Survivor/Caregiver Walk. As the group walks the course, everyone gathers to cheer them on.

The Luminaria Ceremony is also a very touching part of Relay For Life. Each light represents a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. It’s a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope.

The event will end with a closing ceremony and celebration of what has been accomplished.
