The Lowndes Signal

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few weekends enjoying events across Lowndes County.

It seems lately that there has always been something going on, and for a small county, that’s really great. Sure, the lure of events in Montgomery, Selma, or even Butler County and Greenville may be there, but often the events right in and around Lowndes County offer a variety of activities at little or no cost.

This past weekend was no exception as I had a chance to visit Calico Fort for the Horse & Country Show. For folks who like horses, it was the place to be. I watched several rounds of obstacle course competitions and was impressed at the poise and control the participants had with their horses. Even if you’re not a horse person, there was plenty to do – including line dancing. Though I admit I did not join in. I’m sure Becca Salamone did a great job, and maybe some day I’ll work to get my line dancing skills back.

While I am at it, I’d like to thank Lori Cummings, who organized the show and felt Calico Fort and Lowndes County were the perfect place to hold it. Each event that is held helps bring more people to Lowndes County and the region. Many of the horse owners and trainers came to town from North Alabama and beyond.  These travelers spent money in Lowndes and neighboring counties. The travel and events       are great for the local economy.

This weekend is no different, with s special event being held on the opposite end of the county from Fort Deposit at the Lowndes County Interpretive Center on U.S. Hwy. 80.

This Saturday, those looking for something to do and advice on getting healthy can attend the Myron’s Helping Hands Foundation’s Total Health & Wellness Expo 2019.

features a variety of food vendors, health vendors, live music, painting, bouncers for the kids, raffles, prizes, treats and event a one-mile walk and speaker.

“This year, our health expo focuses on all ages and total body health,” Osha Surles of Myron’s Helping Hands Foundation said. “We will be focusing on them physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  We’ll have a nutritionist, people from the Health Department, various agencies and the Blood Bank on hand. Alabama Mental Health and the Sunshine Center will be there. We’re going to educating people on how to stay fit. I’m very excited.”

Best of all, for all of those who attend, it’s free. Kids can try their hands at a variety of activities including art and even take a look at a fire truck, courtesy of Hicks Hill Black Belt Volunteer Fire Department.

In coming weeks, summer activities begin for children and adults alike at a host of locations from churches to the library.

Be sure to take advantage of all of the opportunities in and around Lowndes County to enrich and enjoy yourself.
