Council members were updated on a variety of things going in during a recent meeting in Fort Deposit.

The Aug. 12 meeting included updates on the July police calls provided by Chief Terry Steiner. During the month, the department had 20 charges/investigations, which included:

• 1  Interfering with child custody
• 1  Criminal mischief
• 1 Trespassing
• 1 Identity theft
• 1 Resisting arrest
• 1 Arson
• 1 Car crash
• 6 Theft of property reports
• 2 Menacing
• 1 Disorderly conduct
• 2 Eluding the police
• 1 Criminal mischief
• 1 Reckless endangerment

The Fort Deposit Council also took action on approving contracts to remove timber on several pieces of city property and signed off on having Alabama Power switched all of the street lights to LED lights, which will make it safer and brighter around town. Alabama Power officials recently attended a meeting with the Council and Mayor Fletcher Fountain in which the details were discussed.

William Steiner also gave an update on the census and the update concerned Fountain and the council.

“We submitted 172 addresses and they reduced it by 27,” Steiner said. “Some were added, some deleted. The Census Bureau totally accepted only 107 residences. There were 13 not accepted and 24 that were ‘out of jurisdiction.’”

Fort Deposit now has 45 days to review the numbers and file an appeal.

“We’re losing a lot of units,” Fountain said. “We need to make sure that when the Census begins, everyone has correct 911 addresses. The list of 911 addresses may be the key to it. We can also check the addresses against the statements from the water board. This is very important. We need to get it right.”
