With money becoming available from the new statewide fuel tax, the Town of Hayneville will apply for grant funds for paving projects.

During its meeting Monday night, the Town Council discussed getting an application into the state before the Aug. 31 deadline.

“There are some projects that we can do,” Mayor David Daniel said. “They are allocating money to the counties and municipalities and we have until Aug. 31 to get our application in. The streets we would probably work on would be part of Pine Street and we’ll look at some potholes. What we’ve got to do is put together a plan of what we’ll do.  We’ll look at Knight Street and Cedar Street and part of Pine Street. There are some potholes on Oak Street, and other streets. We’ll look at several streets. I think Hayneville could probably get about $12,000 the first year and maybe $16,000 the next year. I’m going to try to get that plan together by Aug. 31.”

The Council also discussed a water bill problem with Allen McWilliams that said since a new water meter was installed, he’s had a leak and much higher water bills.

“I had been using 800-900 gallons a month and now it’s much more,” McWilliams said.

Daniel said he would look into the problem.

“Let us check it out and see about this new water meter,” he said. “We’ll give you a call.”

In other business, the Council gave a pay raise to an employee and discussed having the 2017-18 audit performed by the firm Harris & Shepard. Daniel said the firm would work on the audit in November.

The Council also discussed purchasing a new vehicle for the street department.

“It will be for the water and sewage operator,” he said. “We will go up to the state and look at a truck. If the council has any recommendations we will look at that.”

The council approved allowing Mayor Daniel and Councilman Jimmie Davis checking on vehicles for the town.

The Hayneville Town Council also had a lengthy executive session discussion, but took no action.
