Two events that will tie together will be held Saturday in Hayneville.
A parade designed to honor the late Sheriff “Big John” Williams will lead to a Peace and Justice Rally on the Hayneville Town Square in front of the Lowndes County Courthouse.
The parade is set to leave the DHR office parking lot on AL-97 at about 12:15. According to social media information, organizers are looking for bikes, 4-wheelers, ATV’s, go-carts, horses and more to participate.
Organizers are also trying to raise funds to erect a statue of Williams. The Lowndes County Commission voted after Williams’ line of duty death last fall to rename the Lowndes County Courthouse in his memory.
The parade will make its way to the Hayneville Town Square, where at 1 p.m. a Peace and Justice rally will be held.
The event is being called the Lowndes County Rally and March for Peace and Justice in Honor of George Floyd. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Courtney Meadows. Organizers have asked attendees to “please wear protective masks and practice social distancing.”
