The Lowndes County Cattlewomen’s Association honored its Father of the Year and awarded its annual scholarship Monday night.

Cattlewomen’s Association President Allyson Dansby presented John Tindell Morgan with the group’s scholarship and then announced the Father of the Year, Alan Haney.

On each table was a poem that was read to begin the banquet from the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association:

“He’s more than the man, the myth, the legend – he’s firm in hand and a kind eye.

He’s the provider – the guardian.

He’s the disciplinarian and the playmate.

He’s the one with all the best stories and the one who wears the most stress.

He’s the advice giver – the sage – but he’s also the comedian.

He’s passionate about his family and his dreams are as big as his heart – and while he might not always hold your hand, he always has your back.

He’s dad – and for all that he does, we love him.

Happy Father’s Day!”

For the dinner hosted by the cattlewomen it was what one would expect – steak. The fathers and their families enjoyed a meal before the festivities.

Dansby then announced scholarship winner John Morgan.

“John went to Lowndes (Academy) and his plans are to go to Wallace in Selma and study in the welding program,” she said. “John really impressed us with his work ethic and his interest in agriculture.”

Morgan thanked the Cattlewomen’s Association, his family and the Lord above for the scholarship.

Dansby then introduced the other award winner.

“This is an award that the Lowndes County Cattlewomen give out every year,” she said. “Lowndes County is full of wonderful fathers – it’s hard to narrow it down. We are really excited about our Father of the Year this year. We feel he really exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond for his family. This year’s Father of the Year is Mr. Alan Haney.”

Haney’s son, Trevor spoke about his father.

“He supports me in everything I do,” Trevor Haney said. “I don’t even remember the last time he missed a ballgame or any of my functions. I wouldn’t be very successful without him. I want to thank the Cattlewomen’s Association for honoring him.”

Alan Haney said he was surprised. He also said he had called several people – who told him he had to attend because the crowd might be sparse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s a very good privilege to be named Father of the Year,” Alan Haney concluded. “I’ve enjoyed this very much. I’m really surprised.”
