Episcopal seminarian Jonathan Daniels was martyred in August of 1965.

The annual Jonathan Daniels Pilgrimage has become a fixture for many and a reminder that the equality for which he gave his life is a continuing sacrifice.

Participants will gather in the square at the Lowndes County Courthouse, continue to the jail and the site of the cash store where Jonathan was shot, point-blank.

The trek will return to the courthouse, where his murderer was found not guilty by an all-white jury.

A Eucharist will be held, with the judge’s bench transformed into an altar. Names of all the Alabama martyrs will be read out loud. This year, a choir is being formed to sing at the Eucharist.

For information and to sign up please contact Quincy Hall, quincyhall2010@gmail.com.

Lunch will be served after the walk for a nominal cost.

A panel discussion including witnesses from 1965, family members of some of the martyrs, and Bishops Glenda Curry and Russell Kendrick will follow.

The pilgrimage is sponsored each year by the Dioceses of Alabama and the Central Gulf Coast. For more information about the pilgrimage contact carolynjfoster@bellsouth.net.

A youth lock-in will be held the night before the pilgrimage at Ascension Episcopal Church in Montgomery. To register, go to https://bit.ly/PilgrimageYouth2022.
