Rebels assault Ashford

Jamie Wheeler had a lot to cheer about Friday night. The daughter of Pete and Zoe Wheeler was crowned 2010 Homecoming queen and her Lowndes Academy Rebels trounced the visiting Ashford Academy Eagles (0-7) 54-12 in Friday night gridiron action.
The Rebels (7-1) took no prisoners early on as they moved the ball with relative ease against the hapless Falcon defense.
Anderson Casey scored for the Rebel’s first with a 28-yard scamper around the left end to put Lowndes up 6-0 with 11:06 left in the first quarter. Richard Pate added the point-after kick and the home team led 7-0. Casey also had a 19-yard run on the drive.
After an Eagles punt, the Rebels again scored quickly on a Chance Ward 76-yard sprint to the end-zone. Pate’s kick was good as Lowndes took an early 14-0 lead.
“Our guys got lazy after taking the lead, but we did see a lot of our younger players improve tonight,” said Rebels Coach Art Sullivan.
After another Falcon punt, the Rebels high-octane offense struck again with 5:14 to play in the first quarter as quarterback Hank McIntosh hit Casey with a 21-yard strike. Pate’s kick again added the point-after-touchdown and the Rebels were ahead to stay.
Lowndes jumped ahead 28-0 as McIntosh called his own number to close out the first-quarter with a 12-yard run for to score.
After a Toby King recovery to start the second-quarter, Ward dashed around the right side of the offensive line for another touchdown.
King also had a 76-yard interception with 5:32 left in the half as the Rebels coasted to a 42-0 lead.
As the homecoming court began to gather on the sidelines, Lowndes closed out the first-half scoring with a McIntosh to Casey 51-yard pass as they took a 48-0 lead into intermission.
Two late Falcon scores gave Ashford 12 points to move the score to 48-13. Garrett Headley ended the scoring onslaught for Lowndes with a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown allowing the Rebels to celebrate their homecoming with a 54-13 win.
“We would like to see the guys focus and keep their concentration through the entire game,” Sullivan said.
The Rebels travel to Chambers Academy next week.
Sullivan added if the Rebels secure a win against Chambers, they will probably see themselves in a second place ranking.
