Turkey day thoughts from Lowndes residents

As Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of all the wonderful things I have to be thankful for.
I am thankful for three-and-a-half , soon to be four, beautiful and healthy children, for a husband who loves me like Jesus does, for a warm home to lay my head in at night, for an amazing family who supports me in every endeavor I chase, for my best friend who is willing to drop everything at a moments’ notice to be there for me, and most importantly for the Savior who gave his life so that I could live mine.
As I thought about what I’m thankful for this year, I began to wonder how others feel about the upcoming holiday. I wondered if it means the same thing to our readers as it does to me, and how the community views the day. I began reaching out to some of our readers, and this is what I found out.
Rebecca Harris told me about how she perceived the hold, as a child and later as an adult.
“As a child, Thanksgiving was about the pilgrims and Indians getting along in what is now the United States of America,” Harris said. “As an adult, it is a special time to be with family and close friends, sharing an abundance of food. No pressure or stress of gifts. In the middle of being a child and adult, before ‘Black Friday’ lasted 6 weeks, after Thanksgiving dinner, we all scoured and planned where we would go shopping to get the best sales!”
Maurlan Dickerson explained that Thanksgiving s a time to be humble and to remember all that we have, that we sometimes take for granted.
“Thanksgiving to me is a time to step back and be appreciative of all the blessings we are surrounded by everyday,” Dickerson said. “I enjoy the time with family, the food, and an afternoon in the deer stand.”
Allyson Dansby expressed the joy she feels about gathering together with her loved ones.
“I love getting together with family and friends over the Thanksgiving holiday,” Dansby said. “It’s a great time to slow down and give thanks to God for all of His many blessings.
Gordonville mayor Orbuty Ozier expressed that for her, Thanksgiving is just that – a time to give thanks to our almighty God.
“Thanksgiving to me is a time that’s been set aside to give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,” Ozier said. “He allows us to come together as a physical family in order that we are able to enjoy eachother and give thanks to Him for everything. It’s a good time to reminisce and enjoy family and friends. The best thanksgiving for me is yet to come, because I enjoy them all. Its my favorite time of year.”
Jacqulyn Boone told me about what makes her smile as the holiday approaches.
“I’m grateful for another God given opportunity to celebrate the warmth of family, the joy of shared moments, and the abundance of blessings that fill our lives,” Boone beamed. “Wishing everyone a Thanksgiving filled with love and gratitude.”
As we all prepare to fill our plates, I encourage you to take a moment to remember what this holiday truly means, and the reason we celebrate this day. The turkey will be delicious and the football games will be engaging, but what are you truly grateful for this Thanksgiving?
