Members of the Lowndes County Commission gathered together in Hayneville on Nov. 28 to discuss an appropriation made to the town of Hayneville by Commissioner Dickson Farrior in the amount of $500, funds which will benefit the town’s holiday festivities this year.

“This money was given for the [Hayneville] Christmas parade,” Farrior said. “It’s for them [the town of Hayneville] to be able to buy some things for that and be able to put some decorations up in the town square.”

Another item discussed during the meeting was a motion to approve the potential purchase of a building from the Lowndes County Board of Education, according to Commissioner Robert Harris.

“We’re looking to possibly house a dialysis center,” Harris said. “[The purchase] was approved and now both parties will have to agree on the cost.”

The building in question formerly housed the Lowndes County Health Department, and Farrior believes a dialysis center would be of great benefit to the citizens of Lowndes County.

“We need a dialysis center,” Farrior said. “There is money out there for medical equipment and if we had a building we could get a grant for the money to open a center.”

Farrior discussed the great need for a dialysis center in the county as it pertains to residents who are currently having to travel long distances to receive the care they need.

“We’ve got about 60 patients in the county that are on dialysis and it would be great if they didn’t have to go so far,” Farrior expressed. “There’s a center in Hope Hull now and that helps but most have to go to Greenville, Selma or Montgomery to get that service. It’s [dialysis] hard on a person and if they had a shorter ride that would help some.”

A large portion of the meeting was spent in executive session where Harris said commissioners talked over business that cannot be disclosed to the public at this time..

“We had some legal issues that we dealt with in executive session,” Harris said. “We passed a motion for the attorney to handle a taxation issue that we had and we’re trying to resolve.”

The next meeting of the Lowndes County Commission will take place on Dec. 11 at 10:00 a.m. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
